Education and Family
The education system is failing our children. Not the teachers, but the system itself. I have worked some tough jobs, but none that compare to being a teacher. As a homeschooling father of two children, I support parents’ rights to educate their children how they see fit. I also believe that public school teachers need to be paid more, and that we need to invest in our education system so that all children have a fighting chance.
Agenda
-
Support families' rights to homeschool, and find a middle ground between the necessary oversight to ensure children are receiving an education, such as yearly testing, and the freedom for parents to create their own curriculum.
-
Guarantee the necessary funding to allow our public schools to be successful in preparing children for adulthood, including teacher pay raises, an additional budget for school supplies, repairs for education facilities that have become outdated or fallen into disrepair, and funding for the arts, which is an essential part of education and preserves our culture and heritage while developing creativity.
-
Education should be the primary focus of a child’s life, and an after-school job shouldn’t excessively interfere with that. If elected, I will strengthen child labor laws to ensure kids won’t be taken advantage of while making some extra money and gaining valuable work experience.
-
College isn’t for everyone. I support including trade programs in high school to ensure that young people can access a free education that prepares them for their future. There’s no reason to wait until college to begin preparing for a career in a trade.
-
If you do decide to go to a four-year college, there’s no reason it should cost an arm and a leg. That’s why I support lowering the cost of tuition and tackling student debt, so young people can start their adult lives without being buried under loans.
